The simple act of proposing dinner at this restaurant trips up the tongue: “Do you want to eat at Eat at Jumbo’s?’’ But the repetition, and the elephantine name, foreshadow the meal you will have. Food here is big. Burgers can be supersized into “mammoth’’ one-pounders. Large pizzas are a foot and a half wide. Pasta portions might be measured by the pound.
May we suggest Garlic knots, maple BBQ wings, zesty chicken tenders, little Italy sandwich.
The menu seems designed for the students down the street at Tufts, whose mascot, Jumbo the Elephant, gives the restaurant its name. Most of the menu can be divided into classic student food groups: pizzas, burgers, wings, and sandwiches. And it’s cheap — the most expensive item is an 18-pack of large chicken tenders ($18.99), and it’s hard to imagine a single person, even the burliest of students, eating them all. Sandwiches and burgers are well under $10; an 18-inch cheese pizza is $10.99.

More than three billion pizzas are sold each year in the United States, and based on industry statistics, at least one billion of those are to-go orders or delivered. That adds up to more than 200 million pounds of cardboard waste, and most of that cardboard should not be recycled because it has come in contact with food.
Eat at Jumbo’s is working with its customers to reduce that by offering its to-go pizza in reusable washable pizza boxes. The benefits of replacing wasteful cardboard boxes with hybrid pizza boxes include a more sustainable business practice with a smaller carbon footprint than one-time use cardboard, better taste and no cheese sticking to box, and positive community value, a demonstrated commitment to a sustainable community.

On a recent weekday evening, a friend and I decided to test out Ball Square's newest arrival, Eat at Jumbo's. There's been a hole in the heart of Ball Square ever since the much-loved Urban Gourmet burned down in October 2006.
While Urban's cuisine can be procured at the nearby City Slickers, Ball Square was in danger of becoming "Breakfast Square." Now, after many fits and starts in getting the storefront rebuilt, Jumbo's opened last month with a similar menu.

Call it cutting down on your pizza footprint. A Ball Square pizza spot is the first restaurant on the east coast, and the ninth in the country, to offer environmentally-conscious customers reusable plastic boxes for take-out pizza orders.
The best news for pizza purists: the new boxes actually make a pie taste better - unlike cardboard, the cheese never sticks to the plastic. Owner Grover Taylor said he was inspired to pursue plastic boxes last year when he served 250 pizzas at Tufts University's freshman orientation and saw the pies and cardboard boxes destroyed in less than 10 minutes. "It was awful," he said. "There was cardboard everywhere."

If you have a craving, he has your solution.
Grover Taylor - Owner, Eat at Jumbo's: "If you crave it, I got it."
His name is Grover. And his restaurant is named Eat at Jumbo's.
Located in Ball Square Somerville, Eat at Jumbo's serves the kinds of foods you crave. Oversized subs, piping hot pizzas, and all kinds of fries.
Grover Taylor - Owner, Eat at Jumbo's: "It's good food man. It's what most people wake up and say hey I want a cheeseburger today, I want some big juicy fat wings." Just about all the food at Jumbo's really is jumbo. Burgers weigh in at half a pound, like the Sizzle Burger topped with peppers and onions. For two bucks more you can double the meat and make it a one pound Mammoth burger. And if you want fries with that, they've got you covered.

In a nation where the government is more aggressive about banning trans-fats than assault weapons, the true contrarian-poet fights back with an all-out assault of fat. Join the battle, at Eat at Jumbo's, open now. Created, like most great restaurants, by a neighborhood commercial real estate expert, Jumbo's does aggressively husky portions of comfort food classics in a yellow-walled 28-seat space featuring curated local art, elaborate liquid-chalk menu boards, charcoal-stained red oak counters, and all the gratis peanuts you can hoover.
